How to Create a Career From Anywhere in the World
How to Create a Career From Anywhere: When it became natural to spend every morning crying on my way into the office, I knew it was time for a change. It was 2010 and I had finally hit rock bottom.
Externally, though, my life looked amazing: I was the top seller at my $100,000-a-year corporate job and I lived in an amazing Chicago neighborhood with my even more amazing four-year-old son. But I couldn’t plaster a fake smile on my face to mask my internal turmoil any longer. I was watching life pass me by. When I got home from work it was practically my son’s bedtime; I was missing moments I would regret and it was destroying me.
“When it became natural to spend every morning crying on my way into the office, I knew it was time for a change.”
I have to be honest with you. Moving back in with my mother was hard to do. She, just like everyone else I knew, did not understand how someone without a good chunk of money to support themselves could ever become a successful entrepreneur. But I refused to let that deter me.
I began exploring my interests and tapping into my knowledge of marketing and selling. It wasn’t long before I realized that I could actually help other women market their own, already established, businesses and increase their income, so I built my first website site as a consultant, created a Facebook page, and was open for business! Of course, the money did not come pouring in overnight. It took me about 12 months to get back on my feet. I didn’t have my own car or my own personal space, but I refused to feel depressed about my circumstances and continued to channel my internal motivation. What kept me going was seeing my son, so happy and young. I wanted him to grow up in a wealthy, free, and abundant environment; which only I could create for him.
I lived with my mother and my younger brother for almost two years. Even as my business began to grow, I decided it was the smartest thing to do—instead of going out and paying rent and creating new bills for myself, I used the money to invest back into my business and travel to places I was never able to previously go. As a single mother, having my mom around to help me with my son was a blessing. She loved spending time with him everyday, which was helpful when I needed to hop on coaching calls; working tirelessly to build my freedom-based empire.
“Today my business is making six-figures a month—what a difference four years can make.”
After a few months of learning, testing, and changing my business tactics, I invested in a mentor who was already in the position I wanted to be. Eventually, after the initial slow growth, my income reached $8,000 a month. It felt so unreal to finally see the equivalent of my corporate salary in my bank account, all by creating my own work and seeing it help so many people. Today my business is making six-figures a month—what a difference four years can make.
I also realized that as long as I had my laptop, I could work from practically anywhere in the world. So I began to increasingly take advantage of the opportunity to travel with my son, coaching the abundance of women who wanted to do the same. My job became helping them discover how to achieve this lifestyle. Women all over the world were asking me, “How on earth are you able to travel so much, with your young son, and still work!?” People don’t realize that they are allowed to run their business on their own terms; instead they feel trapped, unable to live life while they are building their business. My job was to show them how to structure their business to work even while traveling abroad.
To create a business that allowed me to work virtually anywhere, I capitalized on skills that I had already developed in my previous roles and I tell my clients to do the same. Look at what you are currently doing and figure out how to get the same job done without going into an office everyday. Can those meetings be taken on the phone? Can that presentation be presented over Skype or Google Hangout? Is it truly a necessity for you to be present in order to do the work that you do? You will often discover that the answer is no. We may want to see the person we are meeting with face-to-face, but today face-to-face can be done from different continents when you utilize a virtual business environment. I currently have clients all over the world, from Australia to London, and I don’t have to step foot on an airplane to meet with them.
“You have to want it more than anything and you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it.”
The bottom line is, to be a woman living out her dreams and living life on her own terms, you have to have a strong, overwhelming, desire to do so. You have to want it more than anything and you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it. Often times, this means completely changing the way you work which can be extremely difficult, but if you want it enough, you’ll not only accept the necessary change, you’ll embrace it. I sacrificed security, independent living, and money for two years to become the coach I wanted to be; and creating the future you want for yourself involves just that—sacrifice. You have to be willing to accept that.
The thought of creating a location-independent business from the ground up may sound scary. And when you add traveling across the world into the mix, it can sound nearly impossible. But I can guarantee that it is possible. Since 2010 I have traveled everywhere from Italy, London, Thailand and Bali, to Singapore, Malta, Cypress and everywhere in between. With passion, hard work and tenacity, you can jet-set and run your business without missing a beat.
