Team Liquid’s Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma has confirmed via Twitter that he will compete at Genesis 4 in San Jose, California, despite a broken index finger. The tournament is Jan. 20-22.
Hungrybox is an avid dodgeball enthusiast, and he sustained an injury to his right index finger earlier this week. At first, it was uncertain if he would compete at Genesis 4, but with a video uploaded to Twitter, Hungrybox confirmed that he would attend, albeit using a different play style.
Hungrybox will have to keep his index finger in a splint and will therefore have to hold his controller in a different style. He will opt to use his middle finger and thumb to grip the controller and will possibly use his middle finger to hit the R and Z buttons.
Genesis 4 is already a stacked tournament for Melee, with almost every top-20 player in attendance. Hungrybox, who is currently ranked first in Red Bull’s fall 2016 power rankings, is definitely one of the most challenging obstacles for any top player. But this new injury might give an advantage to those who have struggled against the aerial wall his Jigglypuff creates.
With Genesis 4 just weeks away, it will be interesting to see if Hungrybox can adapt to his new play style in time.
