It’s rare that ballet dancers make their way into the limelight, but that’s exactly what Misty Copeland has done. The 5’2” dancer became first African-American woman to hold the title of principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre’s 75-year history, blazing the way for women of color who’ve been snubbed in the past. Copeland also appeared in a documentary about her life, A Ballerina’s Tale, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. She has not only shattered stereotypes and become a role model for women around the world, she has redefined what it means to be a ballet dancer in 2016. This year, a Barbie doll with a “ballerina body” modeled after Copeland’s, will appear on store shelves.
